About me: This page is designed to give you a brief history of who I am. It seems only fair that I share some of my information since I am always asking my fellow race fans who they are and what they are thinking.
I am 41 years old and have been watching races on TV since I can remember. I always watched ABC's Wide World of Sports hoping that there would be a NASCAR race televised. Now, its like heaven with qualifying, happy hour and races on every week. I don't know how the world survived with only being able to see a handful of races per year.
I grew up rooting for Richard Petty, like everyone else in my age group. As I became more into racing in the early 90s, I became an Ernie Irvan fan (I liked the Kodak car and will miss the #4 in 2008). Then I began to learn more about the sport and I started to like Ernie because of his ability and not the car. After Ernie was injured in 1994, I had important decision, who now. Thats when I became a Joe Nemechek fan. I have been following Joe's career since.
A few years ago, I noticed that there were no current means of accurately comparing drivers to each other during the season and across seasons. So I started to compile race results. Then I started playing with spreadsheets and formulas. Then my love of statistics took over and I became obsessed with creating an authentic rating system. I looked at almost every aspect of the race results. I came to a happy medium of rewarding consistency as well as aggressiveness. Then I threw in some more reliability angles. I factored in qualifying, but later removed it. After many, many versions of my formulas, I finally became confident with my rating system, the Overall Drivers Index. Now I had the ability to compare drivers in any scenario imaginable. I broke the ODI down by track types (I categorized 6 types- short tracks, plate tracks, road courses, low banked (<14 degrees banking) tracks, high banked (14+ degrees) slow (<175 mph pole speed) and high banked fast (>=175 mph pole speed)). I can split the rating by specific tracks, race number, year, anyway I want to compare.
The first race I saw live was the 1986 Firecracker 400 at Daytona. Tim Richmond won. I have also been to races at Dover and Bristol. But I am a huge Pocono Raceway fan. I have been to over 20 races there. Pocono asks so much more from the driver and car than any other track, three unique turns, the longest straightaway on the circuit (200+ mph) and the scenery.
Some more notes about me- *I live in Thornhurst, Pennsylvania. *I have a great marriage and 2 wonderful girls. *I am a Navy veteran of the first Gulf War, submarine qualified. *I am a state certified paramedic. *I currently work in the financial industry. *I love coaching kids. I currently coach soccer & softball. *I also volunteer some time every week in the Big Brother/Big Sister program as a Big Brother. This group enriches so many lives, but they continue to struggle to get men to volunteer to be a Big Brother. I take my little brother to Pocono every year for qualifying and the Saturday ARCA race and Cup practices. The race on Sunday is for my oldest daughter, a Hamlin fan, and myself. The youngest still thinks its too loud at the track, but she loves Mr Harvick.
So thats me, thanks for visiting my site and sharing in my love of statistics. Trip
